4The Last Hackett Album  Nov 07, 2009
This was the album that was recorded back to back with 'A Trick Of The Tail'. 'A Trick Of The Tail' was released in something like January/February of 1976 and 'Wind & Wuthering' was released in appx. November/December of 1976. A very colorful, DRAMATIC album of which seems like Banks and Hackett were competing for album space with Rutherford's light and lilting 'Your Own Special Way' kind of sticking out like a sore thumb. The tone of the album seems a bit darker/sad and at times more aggressive ('In That Quiet Earth') than 'A Trick Of The Tail'.

My opinion and take it for what it's worth (my opinion) is musically 'Tail' and 'Wuthering', are FABULOUS/EDGY albums with Hackett still in the lineup, but they really just don't match up to the charm and eccentricity of the 'Gabriel' albums. If you didn't listen to the Gabriel years, you wouldn't know what you're missing and these albums would be the best in Genesis's creativity.

Another collection of songs from a great rock group. More complex songs, but excellent listening.

4Something Had To Give  Dec 28, 2008
Still very much in the throws of the musical transition that began on Trick of the Tail (CD/DVD) Genesis continue moving on from this point on from folksy art rock to more synthezied arena pop. That approch lends itself to the excellent opener "Eleventh Earl Of Mar" and the ballas "Your Own Special Way" but there is something about this album that doesn't have the same effect as the last one. One of problems is the, while the band still is excersising it's prog rock instrumentation Phil Collins is leading them more and more to the pop side as well. The result is a number of weaker songs on the second half of the album that try to mix instrumental prowess with a basic pop song. And sadly unlike on earlier recordings...some of them fall slightly flat. One of the best songs,a jazz-fusion instrumental "Wot Gorilla?" is cut off before the four minute mark.So.....the instrumentation is great but compositions such as "All In A Mouse's Night","Blood On The Rooftops" and "One For The Vine" could've used to be clipped by about 2 or 3 minutes frankly, although opinions might differ. So...this is not a terrible album-in fact it's likely I'll like it better with further listenings. It just isn't as great or original as some of the earlier Genesis albums. That is because the poppier R&B and jazz inclinations of Phil Collins wasn't meshing well with Steve Hacketts keyboard prowess from the sound of things. In addition Steve's writing contributions being ignored led him to leave the band after this album. In order to accomodate the new Genesis sound this it is actually important that they were forced to pair down after this. ***TO BE CONTINUED***

5"Wuthering" Heights  Dec 06, 2008
Released in early 1977,"Wind & Wuthering" was the last Genesis album to feature guitarist Steve Hackett, who departed later the same year.As a result,it sounds like the band's farewell to 1970's English progressive-rock,just as it would be swept away by punk and New Wave.Containing the driving opener "Eleventh Earl Of Mar",the moody yet lovely "Blood On The Rooftops",the whimsical "All In A Mouse's Night" and the bittersweet finale "Afterglow",it ranks as an underrated masterwork. The remixed, remastered CD/DVD(helmed by engineer Nick Davis)is a big improvement over the previous CD issues in many ways than one.I owned the 1980's one,and it suffered from the same problem as most CD reissues of old classic rock albums at that time did-dull-sounding,low in volume, needed improvement. The 2007 stereo version solves those problems, sounding sharp, crisp yet lush and dynamic in all the right places. The DTS/DD 5.1 is even better, bringing the subtlies and nuances that were buried in the original mix, such as Mike Ruterford's bass,Tony Banks keyboards,Phil Collins vocals and percussion work, upfront.Great job, folks!
