Jason Mraz at His Best Apr 16, 2008
By D. Emerson I really didn't realize that Mraz was coming out with a few EPs prior to his release of "We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things", and I'm rather glad that I managed to stumble across both, because they're fantastic.
On "We Sing", Mraz has very simple song stylings, paired with complex lyrics, to create a great collection of songs. "If It Kills Me" is absolutely sublime, his vocals combined with the heart-breaking lyrics creating a fantastic track, my favorite on the album, next to "I'm Yours", a great version with Toca adding some very nice harmonics. "Live High is also fantastic, a very laid-back sort of tribute to enjoying life.
"We Dance" definitely has a different feel, with far more up-beat tracks. "The Dynamic of Volition" is typical Mraz, with tongue-twisting opening lyrics, and very nice accompanying guitar, along with a very uplifting message. My favorite track is "Butterfly", a very sensual up-beat song, where Mraz has a lot of fun with lyrics involving the lady in question.
All in all, both EPs are fantastic additions to the Mraz collection, since these tracks showcase a more mature side to his studio aspect, yet still hold on to that live acoustic feel that many fans crave. Definitely worth the couple of dollars to have in advance.
