Fresh Air Aug 05, 2009 After hearing the songs on her CD for the first time, Janelle's sound caught me by surprise. What a breath of fresh air! I was compelled to listen to all the elements of her sound intensely - over and over. The passion in her performance is honest and immediate. Great production value, but the strength is in Janelle's voice. Her voice is "rich". You can hear emotion, not just a bunch of meaningless throw-away riffs. I am now a Fan.
Ps: Where is the air-play???
She's wonderful! Jul 19, 2009 Metropolis: The Chase Suite is a breath of fresh air and wonderful to listen to. I read about Janelle Monae on Okayplayer last year and am happy to have finally purchased her CD. "Sincerely Jane" is my favorite song. I love the message. Her sound, creativity, and voice are all amazing. As a long time Prince fan (I'm not comparing the two), I can appreciate her individuality and the fact that she seems to "walk to the beat of her own drum." She is truly a star!
Enjoyable Jul 14, 2009 Sincerely Jane and Smile. Her voice is amazing, the clarity and precision, amazing. Glad someone explained about the shortness of the "suite" will her image/style change with the next release?
Rises above... Jun 19, 2009 I just heard about Monae 2 days ago on NPR. Why has this album been out since last August and I'm just now hearing about it? Because mysoginistic filth pays the bills--no wonder Monae's still waiting to be discovered.
There are wonderful ideas in this suite, a great spectrum of Monae's vocal and emotional range. But I'm not sure they've got it quite together. As a story/concept album, Cindi gets lost. She's an android on the run for being in love with a human but I completely forgot about that by track 3. I would have liked a couple more interludes to bridge the songs. That way you could skip them or just hit play and go on a musical journey. No point in trying to please the masses here.
Also, I'd like a few less 'featuring' artists. The Skunks lived up to their name on 'Happy Hunting'; they're the villains in the song but their contribution merely disrupted and offended. Leave Monae to her own devices and she will create the album this is meant to be. Bring on the next suite!
A True Artist May 31, 2009 Just saw Janelle Monae live at Celebrity Theatre last night, she performed several of her pieces, some from this album. As a live performer Janelle Monet is truly entertaining, taking her music to a level of performance art that i can only compare to maybe Grace Jones and Kate Bush. Pure raw energy is alive and thriving in this womyn, I hope she stands the test of time because I know there are plenty treasures yet to come from Janelle Monae
